The Physics Colloquium is a seminar addressed to the entire Department of Physics. We expect everyone from the Department to attend: from experts in your field to graduate students in string theory or medical physics, encompassing a very large range of expertise.
The information content should thus be ideally customized for a mixed target audience of physicists, and we therefore kindly ask our speakers to keep the first 60% of your talk (at least 30-ish minutes, see below) general, and to use it as an introduction to your field and its current status.
As a guideline, we encourage our speaker to address the first half of the talk to a generic first year graduate student in Physics, and the rest to colleagues in your research field, but not necessarily your specific area of expertise. This should be a good ballpark for everyone to bring home some new information.
The Colloquium takes place at 4pm, and your talk should run to a maximum of approximately 50 minutes. After that there will be a session of questions, ideally no more than 15 minutes, which we will let run longer if we feel pressure from the audience (unless you object to that, of course!).
After the session:
After talk and question, we usually have a session of “students-alone-with-expert”, namely a 30-60 minutes session in which only the speaker and students (no professors or postdocs) are allowed, to remove the local judgmental pressure. Would you be willing to participate in that?
